Angus and Julia Stone
Angus & Julia Stone began as separate acts, each occasionally backing the other at gigs, but it was when brother and sister got it together as folk duo Angus & Julia Stone, that the real stuff started for this twosome from Sydney's Northern Beaches. Their first EP Chocolates and Cigarettes, released in 2006, got them a tour of the UK as well as bookings for festivals round Australia. Their debut full-length album A Book Like This scored big-time. It went gold in Australia to rave reviews. Bernard Zuel of the Sydney Morning Herald described their distinctive vocal styles: "Her voice has a fractured feel like Julie Holland; his has a smoke-on-the-beach drawl." In the UK where the album was also released, reviewer Johnny Sharp called their songs "...simple but blindingly effective acoustic compositions, warm boy-girl harmonies and delicate less-is-more arrangements." While the unassuming Angus and Julia are refreshingly modest about their talent and remain nonplussed regarding their success, their star continues to ascend at pace. A Book Like This has gone platinum in Australia and two successful UK tours supporting Newton Faulkner and David Gray bookended their own sold-out London shows. The duo made their North American debut with the 2009 release of A Book Like This.
